Definition

A blockchain is a distributed database that is shared amongst the nodes of a computer network. It stores information in digital form. A general database usually structures its data into tables, whereas a blockchain, structures its data into blocks that are held together.  This data structure makes up an irreversible timeline of data when implemented in a decentralized nature. It stores data in blocks that are then linked together via cryptography. Upon its arrival, the new data enters a fresh block. Once the block is filled with data, it is chained onto the previous block, which makes the data chained together in a chronological manner. The Blockchain technology was developed in 1991 by Stuart Haber and W. Scott Stornetta. Each block in the chain is given a timestamp as per its addition to the chain. Blockchains are best known for their significant role in cryptocurrency systems for maintaining a secure and decentralized record of transactions.

Types of Blockchain

Blockchains can of the following types,

1.      Public blockchain: A public blockchain is one that anyone can join and participate in, such as a cryptocurrency.

2.      Private blockchain networks:  A private blockchain network is a decentralized peer-to-peer network. However, one organization administrates the network, controlling who is allowed to participate and maintaining the shared ledger.

3.      Permissioned blockchain networks: Organizations, who establish a private blockchain, generally set up a permissioned blockchain network. Here restrictions are placed in regard to who is allowed to participate in the network and in what transactions. Participants require an invitation or permission to join.

4.      Consortium blockchains: Multiple companies can share the responsibilities of maintaining a blockchain. These companies determine who may make transactions or access the data. A consortium blockchain is useful for business when all participants need to be permissioned and have shared responsibilities.

Uses

1.      Finance and banking: One of the major sectors that implements Blockchain technology is the finance sector. DeFi (Decentralized Finance) is the prime sector that uses block. It is an open-source movement to change how financial applications function on a decentralized architecture. At the core, there is no centralization which removes the main issues of funds misuse. It also provides great efficiency when it comes to tracking financial properties. Ethereum is the key blockchain platform that is used to create DeFi applications.

2.      Cyber security: Blockchain uses the concepts of decentralization and ledger technology, making it suitable to fortify cyber security. It helps secure private messaging by forming an integrating API framework that eventually enables cross-messenger communication proficiency.

3.      Voting: Voting has been a quite challenging proposition for the governments of the modern day nations. With blockchain technology, as governments can easily carry out a transparent process for voting.

4.      Taxes: Governments can also process taxes using a decentralized platform that gives free tax payment services to everyone.

Advantages of blockchain

1.      Improved accuracy as it removes human intervention in verification.

2.      Decentralization makes it difficult to tamper with.

3.      Its transactions are secure, private, and efficient.

4.      Transparent technology

5.      Provides a banking alternative and a way to secure personal information.

Disadvantages of blockchain

1.      Significant cost associated with the implementation of the technology.

2.      Low transactions in a specific interval of time.

3.      Regulation varies by jurisdiction and does not remain certain.

4.      Data storage limitations

Future of blockchain

Blockchain technology has a lot of potential to growth in future. One of the prime testimonies of its current success is the influence of cryptocurrency on the modern world. The best aspect of  blockchain technology is that it cannot be hacked or altered, and this digital ledger is used to store transaction records in a verifiable and distinguishable manner.

The sector of gigital advertising faces many challenges now and then, including bot traffic, opacity, domain fraud, and insufficiency of payment models. Hoever, with blockchain technology, one can resolve such issues, and all the transactions can be dealt with efficiency. In future this method can be applied on a larger scale to procure greater benefits.

Self-driving car will become a common commodity in future and it will also employee the blockchain technology for its functioning  Blockchain technology can play a significant role in the functioning of self-driving cars. With blockchain technology, the onboard sensors can capture the information and also securely and transparently store and distribute it with the authorized compoents. These will improve trust and collaboration among the parties involved in the system

Career in blockchain technology

Along with providing the bedrocks for immutable ledgers, blockchain has several marketable career opportunities too. With the trend still undiscovered by many, one can find lesser competition in the field in terms of job opportunities. Blockchain Developer, Blockchain Project Manager, Blockchain UX Designer, Blockchain Quality Engineer, Blockchain Legal Consultant and Blockchain Solutions Architect are few of the roles that the blockchain employment sector can offer. In addition to that,: accountants, public relations, crypto brokers, analysts, and crypto marketers also fall under the career opportunities provided by the blockchain sector.
