What is a Scrum Product Owner?

A Scrum Product Owner is the person accountable for maximizing the value of the product a Scrum team builds. The Product Owner represents customers and the business, works with stakeholders to decide what the product should do, and owns the product backlog.

What are the responsibilities of a Scrum Product Owner?

A Scrum Product Owner is responsible for:

  • Defining the product goal and vision
  • Creating and clearly communicating product backlog items
  • Ordering the product backlog by value
  • Updating priorities after each sprint as needed
  • Accepting or rejecting completed work
  • Keeping stakeholders informed and gathering their feedback
Which industries hire Scrum Product Owners?

Scrum Product Owners work in almost every industry that builds products or services in short cycles, including IT and software services, healthcare, banking and financial services, telecom, education and manufacturing.

What is the difference between a Product Owner and a product manager?

A product manager usually owns the long-term product strategy, market research and business results, while a Product Owner is the Scrum accountability for maximizing the value the team delivers, mainly by managing the product backlog. In many companies one person does both jobs.

What is the difference between a Product Owner and a Scrum Master?

The Product Owner decides what the team builds and in what order, to maximize value. The Scrum Master helps the team and organization use Scrum well, coaches the team and removes impediments. One focuses on the product, the other on how the team works.

What is a product backlog?

A product backlog is the ordered list of everything the team might do to improve the product. The Product Owner owns it and keeps it ordered so the most valuable items are at the top and ready for the next sprints.

What is product backlog refinement?

Product backlog refinement is the ongoing work of breaking backlog items into smaller, clearer pieces, adding detail and estimates, and reordering them. The Product Owner and the team do it together so items are ready for sprint planning.

What is a product goal in Scrum?

A product goal is the long-term objective for the product that the Scrum team plans against. It describes a future state of the product and gives the product backlog a clear direction.

Is there an exam for Scrum Product Owner certification?

It depends on the certification. Scrum Alliance's Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) has no exam, but it requires a course taught by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer. Scrum.org's Professional Scrum Product Owner I (PSPO I) requires passing an online assessment and does not require a class.

How do I get Scrum Product Owner certified?

You can earn CSPO by completing a course with a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer, or PSPO I by passing Scrum.org's online assessment. This CertOcean course teaches the Product Owner knowledge both are based on, prepares you for the PSPO I assessment, and gives you a CertOcean course certificate when you complete it.

How much does Scrum Product Owner certification cost?

The CertOcean course fee is shown on this page. If you take an industry exam such as Scrum.org's PSPO I, you buy the assessment separately from Scrum.org at their current price.

Does Product Owner certification need to be renewed?

Scrum Alliance certifications such as CSPO must be renewed every two years by earning Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and paying a renewal fee. Scrum.org's PSPO I does not expire.

Who are the instructors for CertOcean's Product Owner training?

Our trainers are experienced, qualified agile professionals who teach with practical, up-to-date content, so you grasp the principles quickly and feel ready for your Product Owner exam.

What are the career benefits of Product Owner certification?

Product Owner certification helps you:

  • Build a strong Scrum foundation
  • Raise the standard of Scrum in your team
  • Lead agile teams
  • Grow your product ownership skills
  • Improve your job prospects in every industry that uses agile
  • Stay current with agile practices and connect with Scrum communities
What career paths are open to a Scrum Product Owner?

Common career paths for Product Owners include:

  • Business analyst
  • Project or program manager
  • Product manager and director of product
  • Senior product and business leadership roles
What are PDUs and SEUs?

SEUs (Scrum Education Units) are credits you earn through learning activities that show your continued growth in Scrum. PDUs (Professional Development Units) are similar credits used by PMI. To keep a Scrum Alliance credential, you earn the required SEUs and renew it every two years.
