Definition

Edge computing is a form of data computing where the data is distributed on decentralized data centers. It reduces the vicinity between the source of the data and the clouds and the data centers. The prime purpose of edge computing is to reduce the latency requirements while processing the data and saving the network costs. Here, the edge can be any equipment or device(s). It can be the router, ISP, routing switches, integrated access devices (IADs), multiplexers, etc.

Uses

Edge computing can be applied for a variety of purposes. For instance, if there is a consistent data stream is required then, edge computing can provide fast and uninterrupted performance. Similarly, it can be used for various purposes. Let us have a look at some of the uses of Edge computing.

1.      It can be used to manage healthcare software.  Healthcare software requires real-time data processing regardless of the strength of the Internet connection. The device should be able to access a patient’s records immediately and without any errors. Edge computing can function online and can provide a fast response from the server, because it’s located directly on the local network.

2.      It can be used in the manufacturing industry as well. Manufacturers can use edge computing to control large networks and process multiple data streams simultaneously. If the industrial equipment is distributed among multiple sites, edge computing will provide fast communication between all the devices at all the points of the network.  Here also, the data does not depend on the strength or the quality of the Internet connection.

3.      Edge computing is also used for security purposes. Whenever there is a need for instant security response, edge computing architecture is a better alternative to the traditional cloud solutions. The requests are processed directly at the network instead of the data center. It allows security providers to properly handle the threats and predict risks in real-time.

4.      Finance is another sector where edge computing can find its uses. Edge computing can be used with smartphones and AI applications to enable the real-time data updates. Users can control their financial records, get documentation, and view operations even if they are offline because the key information is stored on their device’s local network.

Advantages of edge computing

1.      Speed and reduced latency: Fast data processing is one of the major advantages of the edge computing. It can deliver much faster performance because the data doesn’t have to travel far to be processed. When the information is located closer to its network, it will be processed much faster. It brings analytical computational resources close to the end users and therefore can increase the responsiveness and throughput of applications.

2.      Safety and security: Security is yet another significant advantage of edge computing. Despite removing data from the local central storage, cloud computing architecture is still centralized. In any case, anything happens to the center due to the power failure or security attack, the enterprise will be deprived of data. Edge computing allows companies to keep some of their control over data by storing the key pieces of information locally.

3.      Versatility: Edge computing has a balance between the traditional centralized cloud data storage and the local storage. Organizations can focus on both, the speed of the performance and send some data to the edges of the network. The other section of data can be sent to the data centers. This method allows working with large data centers.

4.      Efficiency: Edge computing is very efficient IT paradigm. Due to the close proximity of the analytical resources to the end users, sophisticated analytical tools and Artificial Intelligence tools can run on the edge of the system. This placement at the edge helps to increase operational efficiency and is responsible for many advantages to the system.

5.      Reliability and dependability: Edge computing decreases the chances that a technical glitch on the third-party network will influence the operations of the complete system. It increases organizations’ independence and minimizes the risks associated with power failures and security issues.

Disadvantages of edge computing

1.      Storage: It requires more storage capacity. Local networks require hardware to function. This one of the major limitations of edge computing. Not all organizations have physical space to store servers. If there aren’t enough local servers, the edge computing will not be able to accommodate a large amount of data.

2.      Cost: The cost to implement and manage an edge computing infrastructure can be a bit expensive with several complexities. It would also require additional tools and resources to function smoothly.

3.      Advance Infrastructure:  As edge computing provides more control over data, storage and processing. It also requires advanced equipment to manage these tasks efficiently. Rudimentary or less advanced equipment may not able to handle such a paradigm and deliver an effective output.

Future of Edge computing

The future of edge computing looks strong, primarily because of the technological innovations it will allow. Edge computing contributes to several tech trends that are getting attention these days, including smart factories, smart grids and connected vehicles to mention a few. While IoT has driven edge computing, the technology, powered by 5G will play a significant role in several sectors beyond IoT.

It is going to the prime enabler of autonomy, be it the autonomous vehicles or autonomous drones.  Once there is low latency compute out to the edge, on edge compute, it’s going to enable autonomy. It is going to enable better artificial intelligence and machine learning as there will be more compute resources available.

Anything that generates a massive amount of data and needs that data to be processed as close to real time as possible can be considered a use case for edge computing: for instance, self-driving cars, augmented reality apps and wearable devices. All these may become common in future.

One of the prime sectors it will be having influence is the lives of a large section of the society. We all want 5G and 5G doesn’t work without edge. We all want faster smartphones; we all want better experience on our devices that doesn’t work without edge. So, edge computing will directly or indirectly influence a large portion of the world population.

However, accomplishing these tasks at larger scale may require advance tools and better storage facilities. That would add on more cost to the budget of an organization. It has its advantages in future however, to get there, a comparatively higher expenditure will be required.

Career in edge computing

Edge computing can provide several employment opportunities.  Edge computing careers are more prevalent nowadays as compared to the past. Like cloud, edge is becoming an IT domain that transcends industries. IT professionals can take their edge skills with them to all kinds of different organizations. Any organization with multiple locations and data sets that can be mined for trends can deploy intelligence at the edge for gain.

Edge computing is creating a variety of new employment opportunities for networking and hardware professionals, as well as software engineers. New technologies such as 5G networks will also help continue pushing out to the edge of this niche, leading the way into the age of insights.

If someone is a network engineer then they can utilize their skills and knowledge here. The remote nature of many edge environments requires serious networking and connectivity skills, adapted for new requirements. Thus, it would also generate employment in the networking sector.
